So much going on!

The past two weeks have felt like a whirlwind, gone are the days of being able to drink coffee peacefully while my son plays with his trains. Now we are on the road!

Roman has therapy three times a week (physical, occupational and speech) and is also in Preschool twice a week. His preschool is half an hour away and his therapy is about 25 minutes (which isn't too bad, I know people that are on the road for much longer).

I am also in a small "battle" with the school district here to get my son services through the district instead of private therapy (or in conjunction, I haven't decided yet). We had him tested almost a year ago and they deemed him ineligible for Developmental Preschool. I left the meeting happy as a clam, thinking my son was caught up and didn't need therapy. Come to realize that he did need the services, but the funding in the school district is so terrible, they are turning down kids that are eligible. So now I'm learning about being an advocate for my child, we have another evaluation coming up next month and I am going armed with reports from his private therapy as well as a letter from them stating that he is more than eligible for services. You may be asking yourself why I'm pushing for this when he already has services in private therapy, the answer is twofold - money and time. Right now we are paying $700+ out of pocket per month for therapy (and this is after insurance), and if I can drive a minute (or even walk ten minutes) to his school instead of driving a half an hour, I would much prefer that. Especially if we want to have another baby in the next year or so.

Zach has also been working some crazy hours. In the last round of layoffs at Starbucks, his entire team was eliminated. That's right, 12 people gone instantly. And only my husband, his boss and another co-worker to pick up the pieces. Thankfully if anyone can deal with that craziness, it's Zach.

To boot, we are in the middle of remodeling our house. We are doing everything too, kitchen (and knocking down a wall too), bathroom, carpets, decorating, everything! And it's all fallen on my shoulders. Which I don't mind so much (I am the control freak of the family LOL), but I'm a Mom of a child with special needs as well as a small business owner so life is a bit hectic at the moment.

The good news is that I have become quite handy with a powerdrill! I am proud to say that I have taken down all the hideous closet doors myself, as well as the old moldy miniblinds (ew), and also installed the new curtains all by my little self. The only thing I don't trust myself with is the radial saw (my vision just plain sucks), so that will remain Zach's responsibility.

So in a nutshell, I am really growing as a person, I never thought that I could handle so much on my plate. But I'm actually doing pretty well (aside from my little breakdown of course) and I see the light at the end of this long crazy tunnel =0)

  1. Best of luck with fighting for your son. Just keep confident in what you are fighting for and make sure you understand everything they tell you, whether it's for or against. I had to fight for a one-on-one aide for my son versus several different aides during the week. Luckily I had the teachers and principal and regional worker on my side fighting with me, but I have heard of people really having to fight hard. Rooting for ya!!
    Kris ;)
PS from what I've heard, school districts cannot use budget or finances as an excuse for refusing services. So make them tell you exactly why they may be refusing.

  3. This is the "Auntie Laura" from My Father's Garden. :) I just read this, (finally,) along with several other blogs. I always enjoy reading what you write. I started by searching you out on facebook to see what you had to say today. I was also thinking about Roman and wondering how he was doing... and I ended up reading waaayyy past my bedtime!
It really is amazing how much we are able to juggle when one ball at a time gets tossed our way, isn't it? I think back to my life before kiddos and wonder, "WHAT on God's green Earth did I DO with my time?!?" I remember feeling busy... I had NO idea! Then, I wonder what it will be like when my children are grown and gone. Then I realize how close that time is. Then I thank the Lord for my busy, hectic life and my house that seems to almost be alive with activity, like a beehive or an anthill. I am so glad I don't have a dull life! :)
